Disc Herniations/Sciatica

Sciatica refers to irritation or pinching of the sciatic nerve causing leg pain.  The sciatic nerve exits the spine in the lower back and courses down through the hips and into the legs and feet.

Disc bulges or disc herniations in the lower back, can pinch or compress the sciatic nerve.  Not only this, but the sciatic nerve can also become compressed between injured and restricted muscles in the hips and thigh.  When this occurs Active Release Techniques is very effective in relieving sciatica and leg complaints.  By effectively treating and releasing the adhesive restrictions in the injured muscles, compression of the sciatic nerve can be alleviated.

When a disc herniation compresses the sciatic nerve in the spine, surgery can sometimes become necessary, however, this is rare.  Even when disc herniations exist, the spine can be effectively treated with chiropractic adjustments and Active Release Techniques.  Removing biomechanical stress in the lower back can help improve herniated discs.  Restoring normal spinal motion with chiropractic adjustments and releasing muscular restrictions with Active Release Techniques can reduce disc herniations resulting in decreased pressure on the sciatic nerve and consequently improved leg complaints and neurological symptoms.
